Susan Kang joined the San Francisco Ballet Orchestra as Principal Flute in 2022. She previously held the principal flute position of the Houston Ballet Orchestra and served as acting principal flute of the Houston Grand Opera Orchestra.
Kang has worked under the direction of prominent conductors such as Thomas Ades, Stéphane Denève, Andris Nelsons, Gianandrea Noseda, and Klaus Mäkelä. She spent summers at the Aspen Music Festival, Bowdoin International Music Festival, Krzyżowa-Music in Poland, Tanglewood Music Center, and Verbier Festival Orchestra in Switzerland. An avid chamber musician, Kang has collaborated with esteemed artists such as David Bowlin, Jon Kimura Parker, and Radovan Vlatković, among others.
Susan has won first prizes in the Donald Peck International Competition and Seattle Flute Club’s Young Artist Competition. Her extensive solo engagements include her live radio-broadcasted recital at the Dame Myra Hess Memorial Series in Chicago, and her performance of Einojuhani Rautavaara’s Flute Concerto Dances With the Winds as a soloist with the Shepherd School Symphony Orchestra.
Originally from Southern California, Susan earned a Bachelor of Music degree at Northwestern University’s Bienen School of Music and both a Master of Music degree and Artist Diploma at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music. Her principal teachers include Leone Buyse and John Thorne.
